New year! God at work in us!
What a blessed beginning we had to our new year. On January 6, we again partnered with Samaritan’s Feet to distribute new shoes to hundreds of persons. Youth from North Carolina provided the time and talent here at our church in Los Fresnos. They spoke Spanish, and served each recipient with foot washing, socks and shoes.
God provided beautiful weather conditions for this outdoor event. All parties wore masks and gloves, as we continue to follow COVID protocols through these days of the Omicron variant surge. Protocols are followed also as we offer assistance to those released from the area detention centers. These are asylum seekers who have passed health inspections administered by Homeland Security units. Each is placed in the queue for a hearing on his/her asylum case, and that hearing may be a year or more into the future. When released from detention, they are served through us and other not-for-profits with food, a bus ticket to get to their sponsor or relative, and personal items for the journey.
On the last day of 2021, two of our volunteers joined with Team Brownsville to distribute backpacks to refugees at the Brownsville TX bus station. Thanks to generous donors like you, we could contribute masks and some cold weather wear to supplement what other area partners had provided. After arduous journeys and clearances, the refugees celebrated with a sense hope for the new year that many of us simply cannot fathom.
More than 50 years after I was rescued from Cuba by the people of the United States, I still celebrate with hope each and every day – blessed that God continues to grant me the good health and spirit to serve. We could not do it without you, and I thank our God for you.
