Ministerios Misericordia - Matamoros, Tamaulipas Mexico

In the spirit of ecumenical effort, it is our privilege to support our brother across the denominational aisle, the Rev. Abel Cardona of Ministerios Misericordia (Mercy Ministries) of Matamoros, Tamaulipas. For the past 21 years the Rev. Cardona has made it his life’s mission to feed the hungry communities that reside along the perimeter of the city’s southernmost landfill. He also makes a point in feeding their souls.

He feeds approximately 250-330 people a day and for most, it is their one and only meal of the day. The community that resides along the landfill’s perimeter is primarily indigent or in extreme poverty. They rummage among the trash for food and goods. This is the most impoverished area of the city. Pre-COVID-19, the Reverend provided warm meals, along with clothing, shoes and hygiene/personal items. For the past year, as the pandemic has raged, the area has become even more economically devastated. He is now only able to distribute 125 pre-made bags of pantry items per week, and clothing, et al sundries when possible. Yet still, he remains faithful to his call and we are honored to help him.

He feeds approximately 250-330 people a day and for most, it is their one and only meal of the day.

Since 2008, along with a small stipend, we have been able to support Rev. Cardona’s community comedor—‘dining room’ monthly, in large part via the Disciples Rice and Disciples Beans programs of which we are so humbly recipients. We are also able to provide him with clothing, shoes, winter items, and hygiene kits made possible in great part via Mike’s Kids. We pray for his continued health and safety, and that of the community he loves and holds so dear.
