Dear Friends and Churches of the Southwest Region,
Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
First, we wish simply to say thank you.
For many years, our churches have helped sustain the work and witness of Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries through prayers, encouragement, and financial support. During seasons of uncertainty and change, you have continued to stand alongside us with compassion and faithfulness. This partnership is not taken for granted. It is held with gratitude, and it is felt deeply by everyone this ministry serves.
We write to you today not with a report, but with a story.
His name is Haziel Lozano. He is a young man from Cuba who, after enduring the long and dangerous journey so many make in search of safety and legal stability, finally arrived at a place where the future seemed possible. After more than two years of separation from his wife, he began rebuilding, filing paperwork, attending hearings, doing everything asked of him, every step of the way. He was in process. He was in compliance. He had hope.
Then suddenly, the legal pathway under which he entered was rescinded.
Overnight, the ground shifted beneath him. The case he had carefully built had to be restructured and refiled under differing legal avenues, each carrying its own filing fees, court costs, legal representation requirements, and impossible deadlines. Not because he did anything wrong. But because the policy changed around him while he was doing everything right.
Haziel’s story is no longer unusual.
It has become, in many ways, the story of this moment. The individuals and families we assist daily now face a legal landscape in constant motion, where cases must be revised, defended, or re-filed to maintain compliance and preserve hope for a stable future. The road does not end when someone reaches safety. In many ways, the longer and harder journey begins afterward.
We are reminded of the words of the Prophet Micah: “He has told you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
This is the work. And it is work the Church cannot leave undone.
For this reason, we ask that you prayerfully consider Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries in your mission giving and annual budget planning for the coming year. Your support directly assists vulnerable individuals like Haziel as they navigate court proceedings, legal filings, transportation needs, and the mounting financial burdens of remaining in lawful process, burdens they cannot carry alone.
We ask, because we believe that the Ministry of compassion and justice is something the Church is called to carry together. And because there are people like Haziel, right now, whose future depends in part on whether the Church shows up.
