The most common phrase I have heard through these weeks of pandemic is “I have never experienced anything like this before.” Second most common: “God help us.” God’s whole world is impacted, and I pray that each of you is staying safe and well.
At the birthplace of our Christian faith, no one had ever experienced someone like Jesus. No one had ever witnessed a resurrected Savior walking among his followers, only to be recognized by the breaking of the bread. No one had ever witnessed a resurrected Savior in the room with Disciples, showing the scars on hands and side to a doubting Thomas. In that passage (John 20:27) Jesus declares, “Do not doubt but believe.”
Throughout the last 2,000 years of human history, many of the agonies and ecstasies of Christianity have been recorded. Yet the essential message of it, and the essential goodness of it, and the model for living established by its Holy Founder still has Christianity as the largest religious group in the world. That’s why we’re here still doing His work at Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries. That’s why I still serve Jesus through this refugee ministry at 82 years of age. And this refugee ministry survives and will continue because YOU are here with your prayers and gifts. Friends of God never retire from what God’s son implores of all who are inspired by Him: LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
We are enduring an agonizing time. Do not doubt, Friends. BELIEVE!
